Distance.

That word has taken on new meaning for millions of people since Covid-19 plunged the entire world into a sudden, unprecedented period of social isolation. The initial quarantine and the ongoing social distancing protocols have disrupted our society and created barriers between families, friends, and entire communities. This intense isolation has been a serious emotional burden for many, with mental health problems like anxiety and depression reaching all-time highs as we collectively wait for the return of something ‘normal’ and the chance to be together again.

However, there are people who were enduring painful social distance long before Covid-19, and they will continue to struggle in isolation after everyone else goes back to regular social activities. Their separation from the healthy interaction most of us take for granted has nothing to do with a virus. It started with trauma.

About UsTogether Hub Creative is a collective of eclectic, compassionate minds who believe people can overcome enormous obstacles and accomplish great things together.

Our Background

Our team specializes in creating innovative projects that facilitate health, healing, and opportunities for positive interaction. We’re especially interested in thought-provoking social experiments that address the social barriers caused by traumatic life events. We are creatives and huge fans of finding unique ways of doing things. We are a small, proud crew, fascinated by the stories of courageous survivors fighting to close their social distance and rejoin the world. We are also engineering non-medical, alternative social experiments intended to help one specific survivor (a friend and former classmate) on his journey to overcome and reverse the sensory sensitivities and social barriers of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).Our team is looking for someone caring and creative who can mesh with our project concepts and assist us with recruitment. We are NOT doctors or psychiatrists and would never pretend to be, as we come from art, music, theatre, holistic health, kink/alternative, social justice and advocacy backgrounds.

Understanding The Struggle

Trauma creates a sort of cruel paradox for survivors, as it often leaves them in desperate need of positive social interaction but unable to pursue it. Traumatic experiences can make it difficult for those affected to even leave their homes, let alone venture into public spaces or engage in social activities.Studies have shown that trauma can rewire the brain and the central nervous system, creating a type of sensory dysfunction that often becomes a daily struggle and a huge social barrier for survivors. Listening to a song on the radio can set off bizarre neurological symptoms. The sights, smells and sounds of a local grocery store can seem like an assault. Touch of any kind - even a simple handshake or a hug from a friend - can be overwhelming and unbearable.

Interaction Is Key

Survivors are often told to read, breathe, practice yoga poses or meditate. These methods often fall short because they don't adequately help survivors adapt to the challenges of interacting with others. This is why our current project, a social experiment involving our survivor and friend, is all about using positive interactions to bring the body and mind out of ‘fight or flight’ with the hope of making normal social activities and a better quality of life a realistic possibility.

Our Inspiration

We were thrown into all of this when our longtime friend was injured and nearly killed in a car crash. In what seemed like an instant, we watched this vibrant, healthy man go from being the life of the party to battling trauma that left him homebound and debilitated.None of this was anything we were prepared for, but our friend was in crisis and not finding the help he needed. That’s when we started searching for alternatives and found inspiration in other projects.

Our Projects

The first project to inspire us was organized by creatives on the west coast who had two young friends struggling with trauma as the result of serious injuries. Their group created a social experiment intended to teach these men how to perform a healing art (reflexology) combined with tickling to provide them with safe, nurturing interaction, calm their systems and help them acclimate to normal social activities again. This project is the blueprint for our own social experiment. We also drew some inspiration from Heels For Combat Boots, a project organized to help military veterans overcome PTSD. Members of their organization generously shared creative insights we will be folding into our efforts, including our Holiday Heels project.

Artistic Endeavors

The creation of artwork has proven helpful to many in their efforts to overcome trauma. We've been inspired by organizations like The Foundation For Art & Healing and their efforts to include art in the healing journeys of their participants. We are seeking female models for sessions with our survivor, with a focus on creating canvas, footprint-based artwork.

Opportunities: Session Models

We are seeking women to take part in sessions with our survivor as foot models for our reflexology and art therapy projects. This requires candidates who are great with people, fit/active, warm, compassionate, between the ages of 18 to 40's, and comfortable being foot models for sessions that will involve foot reflexology and tickling. Substantially or extremely ticklish feet are also required. This role is flexible and pays $20 to $25 per hour. If you're ready to step outside of the box to help a trauma survivor, contact us today!

Opportunities: Project Recruiter

We are seeking someone with enough social contacts here in Wisconsin to recruit for our projects. This is a short-term, flexible, paid opportunity and a fast resume-builder.NOTE: There are no technical requirements or experience required. We simply need someone who can mesh with our concepts and help us find participants for our primary social experiment. We need 2 to 3 female participants to work with our survivor. This is a fun but important project that will be great for students, grads or busy professionals in their 20's, 30’s or 40’s. Ideal candidates will be great with people, fit/active, sensitive to the struggles faced by a trauma survivor, and comfortable being foot models for sessions that will include foot reflexology and tickling. If you think you can help us find the people we need, please write for details!
